Bala Mural Project
Community Art, Exterior MuralDuring the Summer of 2024 I had the pleasure of working on a large community mural project for Gwynedd County Council. I was commissioned by the council to create a mural celebrating the history and culture of the town Y Bala. By developing interactive workshops and running these in the community I was able to find out what the local people of Bala wanted to see in this mural – the cultural and historical mome
nts, people and events that were significant to them.
I designed and delivered the workshops for children at the local school Godre’r Berwyn, young adults from the local youth club, and the older members of Y Bala community at Awel y Coleg, an assisted living home, and a Paned a Sgwrs group, which meant my research for the piece spanned the generations of Bala locals. The people, places and ideas that I used to populate the mural all have value and importance and the mural was greatly received by the community! The design process was supported throughout by the Bala Community council who helped me to finalise the design that would rejuvenate Bala's town centre and brighten up this alleyway next to the Co Op on the high street. The project was funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund.
